My role
Product direction, information architecture, bilingual publishing and editorial presentation.
Who it serves
Readers looking for Maltese and international news in Maltese and English.
Project scope
News navigation, readable stories, explainers, editorial content and source attribution.

The need

Make a wider news agenda easier to follow.

The original idea centred on Malta. As the portal expanded to international coverage, the challenge became helping readers move between local stories and world developments while keeping a clear sense of context and place.

The approach

Local relevance, a broader perspective.

Il-Ġabra brings Maltese and international subjects into a coherent reading experience. The structure supports scanning the headlines, following a topic and spending more time with an explainer or editorial. Maltese and English give readers a choice of language.

Malta & the world

National and international coverage within the same publication, rather than treating the wider world as an afterthought.

Two languages

Maltese and English content make the portal useful to a broader readership.

Clear subject areas

A recognisable structure for public life, business, sport, communities and the environment.

Context & explanation

Space to explain the background and significance of a story alongside the headline.

Editorial presentation

A distinct place for opinion and longer reading, with attention to readable typography and hierarchy.

Sources in view

Source attribution helps readers identify where information comes from and follow it further.

My contribution

From the idea to everyday use.

I shaped the product direction, the organisation of information and the reading experience. The work connects publishing structure with design: understandable headings, useful navigation, bilingual presentation and a visual identity that reflects Malta’s place in a wider world.

  • Keep Malta visible while giving international coverage a clear place.
  • Organise stories around recognisable subjects.
  • Use readable layouts that work for both quick visits and longer reading.
  • Give source attribution and editorial context a visible role.

The outcome

Practical value. A clear purpose.

Il-Ġabra now presents Maltese and international coverage within one bilingual publication. Its purpose remains public information: helping readers find the stories that matter to them and understand the context around them.
